Matayoshi kobudô
Matayoshi kobudô refers to the fighting arts practiced during the Ryûkyû dynasty. It consists of several fighting arts:
1) fighting arts transmitted by the Mâ clan,
2) fighting arts from the lineage of Kyan Chôtoku,
3) fighting arts transmitted by Kuniyoshi Shinkichi and Aragaki Seishô,
4) Hakutsuru-kenpô (white crane boxing) of Southern Shaolin transmitted by Go Kenki (Wu Jiangui in Chinese)
5) Kingai-ryû Tûdî.
Therefore, if one of these martial arts is absent, it cannot be called Matayoshi kobudô.
The name Matayoshi-kobudô can be used by those who have been taught these fighting arts by Matayoshi Shinpo sensei and who are accredited by a certificate issued by the Kôdôkan (main dôjô of Matayoshi-kobudô) and have been certified as instructors to train their students
Characteristics of the style
The kingdom of Ryûkyû, subjected to the policy of prohibition of the combat arts and the carrying of weapons in public, developed and perfected the combat arts coming from Southern China (Shaolin) and Japan (Yamato), "Ryukyuïsant", i.e., fusing them as a means of self-defence. These fighting arts were preserved after the abolition of the kingdom.
The inherited fighting arts are the martial :
1) Nán shàolínsì báihè quánfǎ Shaolin-ha Tsuruken from southern China,
2) the characteristic fighting arts of Fuzhou province, South China,
3) the characteristic fighting arts of Shanghai province, South China,
4) the Ryukyu fighting arts characteristic of the cities of Shuri, Naha and Tomari, generally called "Te" and "Tôde/tûdî.
